Social Media Resources for the Young Social Change Job Seeker in New York
I’ve gotten quite a few emails, IMs, and DMs about how to find and secure a job in social change in NYC. Ultimately, you have to put yourself out there and social media is the best way to do so. This list is by no means complete but I think a good way to get started in your job search.
- If your college has an alumni group on facebook, join it. You can network with people and hear about opportunities.
- Become a fan of Will Work for Social Change by Common Good Careers. They post career advice and jobs.
- Check out these 20 facebook apps for job seekers by cheezhead
- YourOnRamp has a wonderful list of 150 people on twitter to follow for information about jobs, social media, personal branding and all other things career focused.
- I’m a big fan of @Dotorgjobs, @Idealistjobsnyc, @cgcareers
- Don’t be afraid to follow organizations you admire to see if they post job openings, volunteer opportunities, or events. Check out this post from the idealist in NYC blog listing 56 New York Nonprofits on Twitter.
- Click through who these organizations are following—you’ll find some gems!
- Brazen Careerist, an online network of millennial bloggers not only shares great work/life advice but also, organizations post blogs and job opportunities.
- Jobs for Change, a new initiative by change.org, is a hub of social change careers and advice.
Groups and e-mail alerts:
- Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) NYC: Events, workshops, job opportunities.
- Emerging Leaders in New York Arts (ELNYA): For arts minded leaders in NYC interested in social change. In addition to monthly book clubs, happy hours, and conversations about the art world, there a job postings.
- Philanthropy News Digest (PND) Job Alerts: Jobs in fundraising, news and events in the philanthropy world, by the Foundation Center.
Present your own voice:
Let people know you’re in the market, continue to work on (and showcase) your side projects, and be your biggest cheerleader. Linked In, facebook, and blogging are great ways to get your voice out there and connect with other people who share your interests. Additionally, these three forms of social media make it much easier for people to find you when they ( inevitably ) google you. Here are some resources to get started:
